Install it, pick a mode, done.

Adminight has no settings page of its own. Everything you can set is in the toolbar, your profile and Settings › General.

adminight 1.1.0

Install

Download the zip and upload it under Plugins › Add Plugin › Upload Plugin, or upload the folder to wp-content/plugins, then activate it. The dashboard follows your device's setting straight away.

  • WordPress 6.2 or newer
  • PHP 7.4 or newer
  • No build step, no external services

Light, Dark, Auto

Each user chooses for themselves. Click the sun, moon or half-moon icon next to “Howdy” in the toolbar to switch at once, without reloading. The same choice is in Users › Profile.

Auto follows the device: your browser reports whether the device is in dark mode (the prefers-color-scheme setting of Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux desktops), and the dashboard changes with it while the page is open.

A default for the whole site

Settings › General › Admin dark mode sets the mode for everyone who has not picked one. Each user can still change their own. The login screen follows the site default.

add_filter( 'adminight_default_mode', fn () => 'dark' );

The filter sets the default from code, for a site whose settings are managed that way.

In the block editor

The editor's panels, toolbars, sidebars and dialogs are dark. The writing area keeps your theme's own editor styles, so you still see your content in the colours it will have on the site. If your theme has a dark style, the writing area follows it.

The classic editor is dark too, writing area included, and so are the common WooCommerce screens: products, orders and settings.

What is covered

  • Dashboard widgets, posts and pages, comments, plugins, themes, users, settings, Site Health, menus and the Customizer.
  • The media library, with thumbnails and colour pickers shown in their real colours: screens are styled, not inverted.
  • The login screen, following the site default.

A screen drawn by another plugin with its own colours may keep some light areas. Tell us which plugin and screen, ideally with a screenshot, and we will add it.

Accessibility

The colours were chosen for WCAG AA: text, links and placeholders keep a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against their background. Focus outlines stay visible, and the toolbar switch has a text label for screen readers.

Privacy and removal

Adminight stores each user's chosen mode in their profile and the site default in the site's options. It collects nothing about you or your visitors, contacts no external service and loads nothing from other sites.

Deleting the plugin removes everything it stored: the site default and each user's choice.
